i STOLE this DRUM FILL (Blushda fill breakdown)
e kits look so small. Any recommendations for tall people in the $1k to $2k options? I surprised that the don't look like they have height options.
Hey, I've had 4 E-kits over the years, my solution were table raisers I bought off amazon. Being 6'1 they really help out
Great video as usual Tim. As someone who practices exclusively on an EKit, there is nothing better you can do than adjusting the sensitivity of the drum heads like you mentioned. Dialing in your snare pad is especially important as it will help replicate the feel of ghost notes, AND more importantly, a correctly sensitive EKit will reduce fatigue that often correlates to EKit practice. Finally, it may also be a good idea to buy a drum brain that is decent, but not top of the line, and invest $120 in some drum software like EZDrummer. From my experience the brains just don’t emulate real drums as well as I’d like, but there is fantastic software available at all different price points.
Additional context, I have a great Roland TD-27KV2 that I absolutely love.
Great points here! Superior Drummer 2 was what I used for MIDI and was always impressed with it.

I’d recommend a keyboard amplifier for e-kits if you want to play out loud. They have the broad frequency range you talk about and are often neutral in colour.
That's a good tip! Just like you said - really anything that has broad frequency range will work.
I have to disagree with that. You need something that has an impulse response that is sufficient for e.g. a kick drum. Frequency response is typically measured by sweeping a sine wave across the frequency band. That’s fairly similar to playing 88 keys up and down 😊 But drums create sharp impulses, resulting in a broad frequency response. Recreating that impulse requires a lot of momentary electric energy to be delivered by the amp and turned into acoustic pressure by the speaker(s). Keyboard amps might be able to do that but it’s not their purpose. But a good drum amp is purposefully built to do just that.
Many e-drummers say they dig the Mackie thumper to amplify their e-kit. There's a 12" speaker or a 15" speaker version.
@@joelmartinez1504yup !!!! If you don’t want a drum amp the mackie thump is GREAT !!! The FRFR Headrush amp is awesome as well
sE8s all day! Best bang for my buck I've ever gotten out of any mic.
I go with the SE 8

Hi Tim, first of Super infinite Amazingness in all the transcriptions truly out of this world. Would like to ask for a tip. What is the best way to be better in sight reading. At times charts are open charts, big band charts as well like more of open bars, but at times, im struggling with writing the rhythm, I can properly read notes on the chart but writing at times, I get rhythms mixed up😅. But generally any tips on how to read fast. Im a new cruise ship drummer but would like to read more of full note per note vs full interpretation of empty bars. Ty, any tip would do.
Very nicely done.
Please transcribe Omar Hakim - Shadows in the rain ( Sting) Thank you @giovannipapaleo1
Great video. I thought the KM184s came out on top. Very smooth/ balanced/ natural across the frequency spectrum. Slightly less lows compared to some others, but nothing some close mics/ EQ couldn't handle. There was too much "sandiness" and harshness in the transients in the SE8s (and muddiness in the bottom?) for me to consider them a viable alternative. Agree the WA-67s are very good as well. Play-out sounded HUGE and I had to ask - what is your signal chain on the play-out?? Would love to get close to that sound one day!! Cheers.
WA14 for me. I hate the modern 414s without the transformer. KMs were great also.
I used to play the Catalina Club. Those Toms have a very crappy overtone resonance, especially when playing on the snaremount. Kills all of the sustain. Using booty shakers on the mount, the tom kind of floats,l and gives it an amazing big sustain without overtones. Never without them, no matter that drums I play
I never comment on youtube vids but I had a gig in the evening yesterday that relied on backing tracks and a few other things, and I realized that morning that it was randomly shutting off. Without your video I would have been screwed lol. Really great, straight to the point problem-solution format was a HUGE lifesaver. Big thanks man.
You could make an entire genre of music called GoldenEyecore incorporating that sound. Everybody seems to have known exactly which sound this video is going to be about. Every now and then you hear it in other movies and music but I couldn't give any examples although each time I have heard it I immediately think of GoldenEye
“Goldeneyecore” ☠️☠️☠️ hahaha
My buddy uses this a lot in an acoustic lead group and he’s suped it up, rad video and gig Tim!
This thing is so fun man!
cool little instrument!
Big agree!!!
You should check Percubo, from Brasil. The idea is similar but IMO better executed.
Personally for what I need I think this thing is perfect! But seems like Percubo is a cool concept.
Will there be a recording of the gig to hear what it sounds like live?
There wasn't a recording done officially so there are some clips you can find that Cody has been tagged in.
That's a pretty cool setup Tim, and you sound good playing it! My wife and I got to see Cody play last month (with Ben Rector), and it was a really great show. Too bad you didn't get the call for that gig... they went "sans drummer" for that show, and I was a little bummed about that. : )
Thanks so much Kevin! Yeah the Ben+Cody stuff has been sans drummer. Honestly some of my favorite parts of Cody's show was sneaking out into the audience to catch him with the orchestra. haha
Coolest 😊
Thanks for watching!

Amazing work transcribing! And thank you for making it available for download! Very kind of you! Greetings from Ireland 🙏
Thanks so much for checking it out!
From my experience as someone who did work in audio in early 2000's I started in Logic, then got a job in a ProTools shop so I switch both at work and home to Protools. I left audio and now retired and doing audio again because I've been in and around music all my life. From my viewpoint Logic (and Cubase) were mainly used by composer types doing TV/Film/Media work. ProTool is mainly used by engineer who came from more traditional studio work, ones like me who go back to analog days. Now Ableton Live is new to me I started learning it as my DAW to return to audio with and from what I experienced so far it is focused on performance use be that EDM, or even playback engineers for concerts. Now I have started to look again at Logic and probably will try ProTools again. I find Ableton has a steep learning curve it's interfaces can be hard learn. Some people I find liking it for more traditonal work don't use the Session view unless absolutely necessary. I like Ableton MIDI capabilities, not a fan of it for mixing, I like the routing and how I can create effects and drum racks. Getting back to Logic has been easy in general, but I don't like Logic version of Ableton Session view for create music cells and triggering for live use. ProTools I haven't loaded it up yet, but doing my research it has changed some but not a lot, so it shouldn't be too hard for getting back up to speed. Now for the type of music I want to work on Logic or Ableton would probably better suited, but ProTools can do it, but doesn't have as many built in tools. Price Logic is best bang for the buck they tools, instruments, and loops it comes with are very good. Ableton similar to Logic close to same as far as tools, instruments, and loops but I think Logic's are a little bit better in general. Ableton has a lot of pricing tiers not as cheap as Logic but not too much more either. ProTool is expensive (and its Avid) it has some good tools, but form what I see ProTools users are using a lot 3rd party plugins, instruments, and etc compared to Logic or Ableton. I'll add a category and that is education. Ableton and ProTools both have a lot of online classes available. Logic I don't see as much. So that's my view coming back to audio as an old head.
Thank you for this, it really help me
So glad to hear it!
Jackson Parodi did this on his UA-cam channel about 7 years ago. He did so much digging to find it, until He found it was from a Proteus FX.
He was who I referenced in the video. REALLY awesome deep dive and helped me a ton with figuring out it was a tambo pitched down haha.
I really love SE8, they beat 451s and 81s in my studio
Agreed!
NOT as GOOD
I would agree it wasn't the exact same sample. Part of the beauty of music and recording/production is trying experiments and seeing what happens. That exactly what this was for me - hopefully you learned something! I certainly did.
My Drummer is using Logic then remotely sending me his tracks, I am using protools, the levels are never at -18, almost always at near 0. Thx Lorne.
great test, they are all great for OH, my fav would be the AKG
I certainly kept those 414's and use them on a ton of stuff around the studio. Sound amazing on upright piano as well. Used them to stereo mic roto toms for a session yesterday haha.
That metric modulation idea is fucking nasty and I don’t understand it at all
Great idea! I upgraded your idea with the bungee cords going through 8 chain links in the middle and just hooking the bungee cords to 2 tension rods. It stops the chain from going under to the other side and there's no need for and tape. It's also ready at anytime to put on or off.
It sounds like a manhole cover being removed or replaced back on to the manhole.
How about stopping it from LOOPING?!? My gawd...I go into the menu and set it to Loop = OFF. But I see no place to SAVE or anything. As soon as I go out, it's still looping. I go back in and, sure enough, it's still set to LOOP. How can they make it this user UNFRIENDLY? I mean, way to go! 👀
Nice. It reminds me to Katana-Zero feels
Well this was an awesome video, and I’m equally impressed as I read all the comments, and you reply to all of them all with great information. Learned a lot on this video!
really adds some nice "trashiness" to make it sound overall fuller. I wonder if theres something particularly interesting about the gameboy, or if the result would be the same using random headphones as a mic. Cheers from Chile.
I have a subkick which is the same thing just a bigger speaker and it is VERY different. I also think the enclosure a speaker is in makes a big difference. I’ll be doing more of this as it’s a fun thing and a cool way to reuse otherwise outdated and obsolete tech. Haha
I like how you transform ghost notes to passage on toms. Well done
That’s subtle stuff - means a lot to know someone is listening so intently. I appreciate you!
My fave jazz drummer is Billy Cobham, maybe you could expand the list and add him in this list
Great video Tim!
Thanks so much Daniel!
cool little trick!
It was a fun gateway project. Gonna turn a bunch of other speakers into mics now haha.
I am so glad you did this. Super dope! Much love from Baltimore!
Appreciate it!!
Wonderful for character. A little tricky with the phase (in my opinion) to other mics sometimes, but freaking lovely for the vibe!
Yeah. Phase can be tricky for it, I think it's kinda about committing to what it is going to mask and just rolling with it in a way haha. Not sure how often I'll use this thing for drums but I desperately want to try it on a guitar amp.
@@TimBuell True! Compression and Texture tools could work with it quite well...or as (second) knee mic in-between the drums could be badass. Maybe super useful for LoFi-Beats...
would have never expected this but hey, I'll take it and more content like this 😂🔥🔥
Ha! I gotta keep you on your toes. Glad you enjoyed - thanks for watching!

This was the perfect “deep in the back of your memory” Video I’ve ever seen😂
Ha! Thank you. This one sound was foundational for an entire generation haha
vinne can play in Pi timing
Surprised you need a hi hat mic in such a small room with oh .
I rarely use it but a lot of engineers still “like to have it as an option”
@@TimBuell I understand that , just incase a track calls for a closer look at the hats . I’m using a shure beta 52a on kick , 57 on snare top and a sphere dlx in stereo mode 32” from snare but more centered above the Tom’s equal distance from the ride and crash . It sounds pretty darn good . I purchased a plug in called spl de-verb to remove some of the room basically and then use a send with a nice room - ocean way studio . I’m definitely happy with the results . a little subtle eq moves cut 350 from kick , boost a little 60 hz Snare boost a little 200 hz and 7 kHz . I’d love to experiment with glyn Johns tech and recorder man tech , but only have a matching pair of km184’s and those mics are to accurate haha . You have any suggestions for studio oh mics where you want to get a nice balance of the entire kit for most of the drum track ?
what’s the song in the background called?
